The generous dark and red berry flavours of the Shiraz flow through the structured palate of the Cabernet Sauvignon and highlight the fragrant cassis and blueberry aromas. Robust tannins edge the deep fruit and earthy minerality as found in many an established McLaren Vale red. A delightful mulberry jam will round off a sip and pairing will be excellent with lamb, beef or hearty meals.

Ratings
Winestate Magazine Cabernet & Bordeaux Challenge 2021 An estery bouquet with a lift of dark berry and cassis aromas and a rich well-balanced palate with good depth and length of flavours. An elegant wine. 96 pts Huon Hooke The Real Review Very deep red/purple colour, with a subdued, slightly earthy bouquet while the palate is full-bodied and gritty textured, with some slightly rustic, chewy tannins and good persistence. A good honest glass of full-bodied red. 91 pts Winewise - December Treats Lester Jesberg The rich blackcurrant aromas reflect the best of McLaren Vale cabernet. The dark berry of shiraz adds substance to a satisfying palate that finishes with a caress of oak. 4 1/2 stars Mike Bennie WBM Nov/Dec 2020 A mix of blueberry, mulberry, leafy herbs, cigar box and truffley scents and flavours. Feels generous, thickset but layered, with sheets of powdery tannin adding some body and chew. Nice to see a muscular red with such control and drive. Satisfying, strong red wine. 93 pts Fine Wine Club Barry Weinman Ripe berry and currant, with supple oak support. Perfectly ripe fruit on the palate is silky and fine, with the Cabernet adding structure. The finish is long, supple and elegant, with a drying, textural finish that gets a touch chewy. An impressive wine that deserves time in the cellar. 95+ pts Campbell Mattinson Wine Front Cabernet and shiraz go hand in glove, as proven once again here. This is excellent. Firm, powerful, well textured and long. Importantly, it’s been ripened and picked appropriately; it’s not been overcooked or overdone. It tastes of cloves and blackcurrant, vanilla cream, cedarwood and woodsmoke, the tannin flecked with dust. It feels hearty and polished at once; it’s so well balanced that it drinks well now, but it has both the sturdiness and the stuffing to age, and to age well. Drink 2022 – 2032+. 94 pts

Vineyard Notes
A dry winter required early strategic supplementary irrigation on the Davey Estate to assist with bud burst and early canopy growth. Flowering and berry set were good and crops appeared slightly above average. A hail event and strong winds on the 21st of November damaged newly formed bunches particularly on the western side of vines. Damaged bunches shriveled off and vines recovered but crop levels were reduced. Warm dry weather continued through the season resulting in low disease pressure. Summer was generally hot with a record high of 46.6˚C occurring. Vines weathered this surprisingly well with minimal damage to fruit. Although on average yields ended up down, quality was good with strong varietal flavours and structural elements. Gentle working of the skins in the winery tempered the naturally high fruit tannins of the vintage. Harvest commenced in the second week of February with Pinot Noir for Rosé and by the end of the month the Tempranillo and early Shiraz for red was fermenting. Picking finished on the 29th of March with a young Touriga Nacional block.

Winemaker Notes
Generations of Australian winemakers have appreciated how well these two great varieties can work together. The regal Cabernet Sauvignon’s fragrant aromatics and tight tannic structure is expanded by, and gives focus to, the juicy generosity of the Shiraz. Cabernet Sauvignon from two distinct blocks has been selected to lead the chosen Shiraz in this classic Australian blend, creating a worthy partner for our highly awarded Gate Shiraz. Varietal clones selected and the soil in which they grow add further dimension and depth to the blend. Variety Clone planted Soil type Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon Reynella Selection Loam GA & LS Petrucci – Hill block (1982) Cabernet Sauvignon CW44 Red clay Davey Estate – Block P (est. 1999) Shiraz 1654 Grey clay Davey Estate – Block E (est. 1995) Each component has been crafted separately in small open fermenters followed by 13 months maturation of the Cabernet in predominantly 1 to 4-year-old French oak hogsheads and the Shiraz in 6-year-old oak. A further 12 months bottle maturation integrates the wine prior to release.
Other Notes
The region has a Mediterranean climate with wet winters, dry summers and plenty of sunshine. The proximity to St Vincent Gulf, coincidentally named after the patron saint of winemakers, benefits fruit quality with warmer spring and autumn conditions and cooler summers. McLaren Vale is renowned as a premium wine region of great beauty that consistently produces high quality, richly flavoured wines.
